BROWNSVILLE – The Texas Attorney General has warned three Rio Grande Valley cities that their current plastic bag ban is illegal.

City leaders in Brownsville, South Padre Island and Laguna Vista received letters from the AG after the Supreme Court ruled Monday that banning plastic containers as a form of waste management is illegal.

However, the decision to repeal the bag ordinance is still in limbo.

KRGV’s Daisy Martinez spoke with a former Brownsville mayor who was the driving force behind the plastic bag ban.

City commissioners are set to meet July 17 to make a decision that is compliant with Texas law.
