BROWNSVILLE – Dive teams with the Brownsville Fire Department located evidence believed to have been used in a shooting incident over the weekend.

Crews were looking for a handgun in a resaca at the intersection of Boca Chica and Resaca boulevards on Monday.

According to Brownsville police spokesman JJ Trevino, officers responded to the 1100 block of West St. Francis Street in downtown Brownsville Sunday night.

Inside the home, they discovered the victim, believed to be in his early 20s, with a gunshot wound to the face.

He was transported to the hospital where he remains in critical condition.

Trevino says they received information Monday morning that the weapon had been possibly dumped in the resaca.

Cesar Pedraza, assistant fire chief of Brownsville, tells us two divers were taking turns and searching the resaca bottom by hand. He said the resaca is about three to four feet deep but they do have the divers tied to a rope as they search for the gun.

Police said although the weapon was recovered, dive crews continued combing the floor of the resaca to find a missing piece to the gun.

It's unclear if they were able to recover it, but divers ended their search by 4 p.m.

It's also unknown who or what led them to the area to look for the gun.

The details of how or why the victim was shot remain under investigation.
