WESLACO – Candidates are putting in their final push with voters as early voting begins next week.

As of Tuesday, Oct. 16, there are more than 613,000 people registered to vote in Starr, Hidalgo, Willacy and Cameron counties.

KRGV’s Valerie Gonzalez spoke with South Texas College Political Science Professor Nelva Sosa-Sagle about the anticipated voter turnout.

“The expectations generally speaking, and also through academic research, we do not expect during the mid-term elections to have a high voter turnout,” says Sosa-Sagle.

She says if there is an increase anything from five to 12 percent would be ideal.

During the last mid-terms in Texas, about 34 percent of registered voters cast a ballot.
