WESLACO – Hidalgo County officials said complaints surrounding nuisance properties are piling up.

Since the county first started its Nuisance Abatement Program, more than 600 properties have been reported.

Chris Trevino, who oversees the program, said nearly 500 cases were closed. He told CHANNEL 5 NEWS 155 remain open.

Hidalgo County Precincts 1 and 4 are seeing the highest amount of cases.

Since its start in October, the program has helped close 186 cases in Precinct 1 and 143 cases in Precinct 4.

Hidalgo County Precinct 3 saw 88 cases and Precinct 2, 28.

Trevino said some property owners have cleaned up the property on their own in order to avoid paying fines.
