As a show of appreciation, Matt's Cash & Carry in Pharr donated more than $7,000 to the Pharr Fire Department’s fire victim’s fund.

The fund was created last year to help fire victims get back on their feet.

The donation was made so the company could give thanks to the firefighters for their efforts in fighting the 2022 New Year’s Day fire that destroyed the store.

“We just felt compelled to give back to fire victims because we're a victim of tragedy of fire, and know how that feels like, so we wanted to give back,” co-owner Isaac Smith said.

The amount —$7,017 — refers to Psalm 7:17, a biblical verse that talks about giving thanks.

Smith said the donation will be given annually.
