MCALLEN – The McAllen Independent School District hosted a town hall meeting for parents and the community following two scares within their schools last week.

The meeting was scheduled after parents expressed their concern from two separate social media threat incidents. The district responded saying those concerns are reasonable.

In a statement sent out by McAllen ISD Superintendent J.A. Gonzalez last week, the district announced they want to have a welcoming and enriching environment but not at the expense of compromising safety and security procedures.

The discussion comes after two McAllen ISD students made separate threats on social media on Thursday and Friday last week both were taken into custody.

Gonzalez says even though the recent incidents proved to be false alarms, the district will take all matters of this sort seriously.

The Texas School Safety Center requires school districts to conduct drills and exercises, complete ongoing safety and security assessments, and perform a safety and security audit of their campuses every three years.

McAllen ISD already has some procedures in place. The district practices drills for lockdowns, lockouts and fire alarms.

Security cameras and access control systems are installed at campuses. Also, all middle and high school campuses are staffed with police officers from the McAllen ISD Police Department.

District officials will update parents on these current measures with respect to school safety. Future plans to expand on those measures were also discussed.
