WESLACO – The new Hidalgo County Precinct One Commissioner is taking over a list of road and drainage projects.

Torn up roads and work crews can be seen across the precinct.

“It’s good because these roads were broken,” resident Juan Arroyo said.

Some projects in precinct one were started when the former precinct one commissioner was in office.

Resident Raul Alonso said he wants to see all the projects finished.

Arroyo voiced the troubles people in the area face when they want to see new roads.

“That’s what they been doing most of the time. They start the project, and later on they forget about it,” he said.

Historic flooding hit the area in 2015. It was a setback for new projects and people were losing their patience.

Commissioner David Fuentes is now leading the area. He’s inherited multiple projects once he took office.

“We have maps, we have an idea, and we have a summary of projects. We know what the constructions schedule look like,” he said.

A few drainage projects are sitting unfinished. He said they will be addressed.

“Some of these jobs, Mile 6 West has been there for 15 years. The drainage projects has been there for a long time, so we have things that have been sitting in the books and residents have been waiting for a long time to get these things done,” Fuentes said.

The new commissioner said his office will be listening, making sure nothing gets slipped through the cracks and the people aren’t left in the dark.
