WESLACO - A program to get help from FEMA for residents who are physically unable to get to a disaster relief center is now available.

Lazaro Baron says he and his wife need help but he can’t walk very far anymore, so they're stuck at home.

"I'll be walking and I'll fall. I can't walk without the walker," says Baron.

Both he and his wife use a walker to get around.

He says the strong winds and rain damaged their home last month.

Baron says he wants to apply for FEMA but can't physically get to a disaster recovery center.

"I shouldn't drive because of my knees. They go numb. They don't have enough strength," he says.

Hidalgo County Emergency Management coordinator Ricardo Saldana says the county set up a hotline for people like baron.

"This will help the disabled, the elderly and those families that don't have any type of vehicle to be able to be transported to the DRC," says Saldana.

Their information will be given to FEMA representatives.

"This will allow us to send the disaster survivor teams to their address for them to be able to register for FEMA benefits," he says.

Saldana says the hotline became active Thursday.

Any residents who need help can call Monday through Friday from 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. at 956-292-7750.
