Students at the IDEA campus in Brownsville received a live demonstration from the energy company preparing to build an export facility in town.

The NextDecade Corporation treated students to the Wednesday science demo to show them what liquefied natural gas is, and how it’s handled safely.

“We are very excited for IDEA Public Schools to be partnering with them, because it's a great opportunity for our students to get real time experience on something that's happening in our backyard,” campus principal Luz Zuniga said.

NextDecade broke ground on the Rio Grande LNG project last winter, and now has investors.

The company said they expect to have 350 to 400 permanent employees at the facility.

“Not only are we interested in you as potential employees for the facility… we're also interested in your children and your children's children,” NextDecade Corporation Senior Vice President David Keane told the crowd.

The LNG export facility being built at the Port of Brownsville will send natural gas by boat to other countries.

Construction is underway, but it'll take several more years to complete the facility.
