WESLACO – Almost a year after the June floods, there are projects in the works to avoid a similar disaster.

Commissioner David Fuentes recently met with Housing and Urban Development officials to request federal assistance.

About $46 million will be soon be allocated to help with infrastructure projects.

Fuentes says there’s over 30 drainage improvement projects countywide.

The excavation broke ground in April at the Chapa and Brisas project near Mile 9 in Weslaco; it’s the site of a future detention pond.
