PHARR – It’s been an eventful past few weeks for Heaven Lozano. She kicked off August by winning a silver medal in her division in the discus throw at the State Games of America. It was a competition that featured athletes from all over the country.

“It was good because I worked so hard to get over there,” said Lozano.

The PSJA North three-sport athlete wasted no time continuing her athletic endeavors. The next sport up was volleyball.

“It made it to varsity, “ said Lozano. “It was our first game against Donna North and we were warming up when I landed wrong while spiking.”

Lozano heard a pop in her knee. She had torn her ACL. The injury ended her season before it even began.

“I tried to shake it off but I couldn’t walk on it,” said Lozano.

Lozano will undergo surgery later this week. She’ll be out of competition for around five months. Instead of being upset about the injury, she’s looking forward to rehabbing and getting back to full strength for the upcoming softball and track & field seasons.

“I feel good because I’d rather be doing something than nothing at all,” said Lozano. “I know I can handle it and I’ll still try to be working out.”
