BROWNSVILLE – A local recycler says people are trying to make money by recycling paper with personal information.

KRGV’s Christian von Preysing explains what to do in order to make sure your personal information is kept private.

Plant manager Ruben Guerrero says a customer will often bring documents and try to sell them instead of paying to shred them.

“We can't just recycle this. Where did it come from? And then we do our due diligence. We start to make phone calls. Hey, this is doctors' documentation, papers, people's information on it," he explains.

Guerrero says regular shredding businesses may not be enough as information is often left on the shreds of paper.

He recommends finding a bonded shredding business with references.
