WESLACO – Rio Grande Valley agencies are asking residents to be prepared for the upcoming hurricane season.

Anyone in need of assistance during an evacuation is asked to sign up for the state of Texas Emergency Assistance Registry.

The program tracks people who need transportation and other aid in the Valley during an emergency response.

Texas Department of Transportation spokesperson Octavio Saenz said having a head count better prepares first responders.

“You need to know how many people you’re more or less going to serve in order to adjust. It’s just like if you’re going to have a party. You want to know what you’re going to have more or less how many guests,” he said. “By the same token, if we know more or less how many people are registered in the 211 service, we know what resources we need.”

Texas 211 will be in Brownsville on Thursday to help people register.

People can sign up by visiting 211Texas.org or by calling 211.
