A family from Mission has been traveling to Harlingen every day htis week to set up shop as street vendors during the Easter holiday.

Hugo Mireles spent his Thursday at the corner of Dixieland Road and Expressway 83. It’s where the family sees the most business, he said, adding that his family has been doing this for 18 years.

“We do it for fun to help people, we help churches as well,” Mireles said. “I think since we help others, it’s them helping us, and we're helping other people as well.”

In Harlingen, roadside vendors need a permit, which Mireles said is easy to get.

According to Harlingen City Planner Soledad Nunoz, permits are only $10. Vendors are only allowed to set up shop at businesses that are up and running, and you need the property owner’s signature.

Those caught selling without a permit more than once face a fine.

The Harlingen application for mobile vending has closed already for Easter, the next opportunity to apply is ahead of the Mother’s Day holiday.
