CORPUS CHRISTI – A FEMA dome in Corpus Christi continues to assist those affected by Hurricane Harvey.  

Hundreds of donation items made way to the location early Wednesday morning. Officials report they are serving about 80 people.

Volunteer Scott Goldsmith said people have been coming in and out the past couple of days.

“A lot of them are coming in from Port Aransas and Rockport, some local. Things have been fairly calm. I think we have a good population, and I have a wonderful staff. We haven't had a lot of trouble,” he said.

Goldsmith said the short-term shelter will be moving locations in the next few days.

“But we will be operating in shelters around here. These are fairly short-term. I understand there are some more long-term shelters up in Austin and San Antonio, but people have been great,” he told CHANNEL 5 NEWS.

He said the shelter is providing three meals a day with the help of the Salvation Army. However, he warned certain foods are not being accepted.

“We can't, under Red Cross rules, serve homemade foods. So, we're happy to have anything made and inspected in a food-safe kitchen,” he said. “I know we miss out on a lot of wonderful food that way, but the Red Cross worries how the food is been handled. So we can't take it, because we can't have a shelter full of sick people.”

The city initially supervised the shelter until the Red Cross took over on the weekend.

They said they don't know how much longer it's going to be open, but they will remain there as long as it's needed.
