RIO GRANDE CITY – A Rio Grande City man paid for his own funeral services to be prepared when the time came, or so he thought.

Lionel Villarreal says he hired Hernandez Funeral Home in 2013 in order to be buried next to some of his loved ones at La Puerta Cemetery. He says by 2016, he had paid in full.

The 71-year-old tells CHANNEL 5 NEWS he called the people he had signed the contract with to no avail.

KRGV’s Angelo Vargas learned the place has a different name.

Hernandez Funerals director Joshua Llanes tells us Villarreal and others are victims of the former owner, Cesar Hernandez. He sent us the following statement about the case, which states in part:

“We have run into two other circumstances where a family paid for a pre-paid funeral plan but started paying for it and finished paying for it while Mr. Cesar Hernandez is still the owner and did not use a preneed insurance company.

What is different of Mr. Villarreal is that they kept taking his money even though they didn’t have a funeral home to serve the families with.”

He says they’ve paid for other two families who were in a similar situation and will try to do the same for Villarreal.
