MCALLEN – Passengers on a flight from Mexico City landed in McAllen Wednesday afternoon.

CHANNEL 5 NEWS was able to speak with some of them about the destruction they saw first-hand left by the earthquake. They said the damage they saw was unbelievable.

Leonelo Ortega calls Mexico City home. He said it was one of the scariest things he has ever experienced.

Miguel Enriques boarded the flight this morning to be in the Rio Grande Valley.. He was also at his office at the time of the earthquake. He said he saw many awful things from the earthquake, but the worst was witnessing a school collapse.

“That school, it was kind of far from where I was, but there was a school with kids of four or five years (old). It was hard to see all the school collapse. It was really sad,” said Enriques.

Twenty-one children are said to have died in the school collapse. Enriques said he'll stay in the Valley for a couple of days on business and to visit friends.

Mission resident Natalie Padilla, who is originally from Mexico, was in a hotel room when the earthquake stuck the region. She said it’s a tragedy to see Mexico in a state of devastation and that people need to help.

“If people can donate in any way. I was saying a few moments ago, that it doesn’t matter if it’s just a little bit, whatever you can help, it means a lot. So, it’s very important to do anything we can do in order to help. Maybe send something or donate money online, I don’t know, or something from the Red Cross. There must be several ways right now,” said Padilla.

Padilla said she was fortunate enough to have not been injured. She also said that it was hard for her to feel calm during the quake.

She added that the devastated expressions on people’s faces gave her a sense of sadness, but the resilience of the people in Mexico City gives her a sense of hope.
