BROWNSVILLE – Two people are on trial linked to the 2011 shooting case of two ICE agents in Mexico.

ICE Special Agent Jaime Zapata from Brownsville and Special Agent Victor Avila were ambushed by a group of Zeta cartel members. Zapata was killed.

An attorney representing the families of the agents said two men accused in the ambush are on trial in Washington D.C. Federal Court. Opening arguments were presented Tuesday morning.

Jose Manuel Garcia-Sota and Jesus Ivan Quezada-Piña were extradited for their roles in the murder of Zapata and the attempted murder of Avila.

Garcia-Sota was extradited to the United States in October 2015, while Quezada was extradited in May 2016.

Four others accused of being involved in a criminal ring, linked to the Zetas cartel, have already plead guilty to their roles.
