UMKC Sweeps UTRGV At Fieldhouse
EDINBURG - The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley (UTRGV) Vaqueros volleyball team fell to the Kansas City Roos 0-3 (22-25, 21-25, 12-25) on Thursday at the UTRGV Fieldhouse.
Freshman Victoire Nama led the Vaqueros (13-16, 7-8 WAC) with 10 kills on .400 hitting and four blocks. Senior Barbara Silva recorded six kills and two blocks. Junior Debora Nazario dished out 25 assists with eight digs.
Ty Lukes led the Roos (16-9, 12-3 WAC) with nine kills and four blocks. Alicia Harrington recorded eight kills with 12 digs and six blocks. Melanie Brecka recorded eight kills with five digs and three blocks.
The Vaqueros led the first set 10-9 on a block by Silva and junior Veronika Jandova. The Roos responded with a 12-4 run to go up 21-14. Nama answered with two blocks and two kills to help the Vaqueros get as close as 22-23.
The second set was tight most of the way as well, with the Vaqueros tying the set at 11 on a Silva kill and 12 on an error. The Roos responded with a 10-5 run to push the set out of reach.
A Nama kill gave the Vaqueros a 1-0 lead in the third set, and an error tied the set at 2 before the Roos went on a 16-2 run to put the set away.
UTRGV plays the home finale on Saturday at 7 p.m. against Chicago State at the UTRGV Fieldhouse. There will be a special pre-match ceremony honoring graduating seniors Draik Banks, Julia Moctezuma, Talita Oliveira, Paulina Ramirez, and Silva.
