EDINBURG, Texas -- The 2021 MLB Draft is underway, but things are a bit different this year.

What usually was a 40-round event, is now just 20.

UTRGV's baseball team has had success getting guys drafted.

At least one player was selected in six of the past nine drafts, most recently in 2019.

Today Channel 5 talked to Vaqueros Starting Pitcher Kevin Stevens.

He's one of UTRGV's 32 players eligible to be drafted this year.

Stevens coming off an incredible season.

He had a 7-4 record, led the team with 97 strikeouts, and an earned run average of 3.17.

With time off from COVID-19, he got stronger and upped his fastball strength to mid 90's.

This draft process can be nerve wracking.

You are waiting on a call that may or may not come over three long days.

From talking to Stevens, you can tell there's a chip on his shoulder after being underrecruited and off a lot of people's radar up until this year.

Yet for Stevens, getting that call is just step one.

Stevens hopes to get the call, but in the end, it's about what you do after the draft process that matters.
