Valley Family Begins Preparing for Flood Damage Prevention
WESLACO - FEMA wants people to know that preparing for the next storm is an important part of recovering from the last one.
One family spoke with CHANNEL FIVE NEWS about the work being done at their home.
Mindy Garza started repairs to her home this week.
Preventing flood damage in the future is one of her top priorities.
Garza got more than 11 inches of rain inside her home and she hasn't spent a night there since.
She applied for FEMA online immediately after president Trump approved the disaster declaration.
FEMA mitigation representative, Jorge Munoz, says prevention is an important part of the recovery process.
"Many people don't even know what to do. They just go and fix things back to like they used to be but never try to do something else like a step that can prevent things to happen again in the future", explains Munoz.
Munoz says FEMA mitigation crews can help answer questions on how to protect your home from future flood-related damage.
