Valley is High Target for Crooks Committing Tax Fraud

WESLACO – The fourth annual National Tax Security Awareness Week is underway as the 2020 tax filing season is around the corner.

It’s a year-round fight to keep your identity safe, but the Internal Revenue Service says the holiday season is when people are most vulnerable, because of all the online shopping they do.

Since 2015, the IRS, state governments and community organizations have put together a week-long event each year to keep the public aware of new fraud strategies.

It’s a nationwide problem, but areas such as the Rio Grande Valley are often times targeted because, for many, English is a secondary language.
