2 Mercedes ISD Schools Remain Closed Due to Flooding
MERCEDES – The start of the school year at Mercedes Independent School District is on hold.
A major flood two months ago heavily damaged two of the district’s buildings. This forced the school district leaders to delay the start of classes.
Deanna Garces says her children were excited about meeting new friends and teachers. She says, however, she did not receive any prior notification that classes were canceled.
Mercedes ISD superintendent Daniel Trevino Jr. says repairs at Travis Elementary and Taylor Elementary weren’t fully complete.
He adds teachers are still preparing their classrooms for the start of the school year on Wednesday.
KRGV’s Frank McCaffrey learned the district is also looking to make up classes missed this week.
