Committee Increases Security for Edinburg 10K Run

EDINBURG – The Edinburg 10K Run Advisory Board is calling for extra security for Saturday’s race, including a bomb sniffing dog.
It takes months to prepare, with meetings take place to discuss medical emergencies and security. The concern for extra security was brought up by the committee.
“This year, the biggest concern was making sure there was enough security personnel presence around the race from start to the beginning, throughout and to the end,” Leo Reyes with the 10K advisory board said.
Thousands of people are registered for the race. Runners are coming to Edinburg from around the Rio Grande Valley, country and world.
Reyes said committee members raised concerns about attacks.
“We have advised our security police department to see if they have bomb sniffing dogs to able to check any suspicious bags,” he said.
An active shooter plan is even in place. The Edinburg Police Department is setting up a command post.
Edinburg Police Assistant Chief Oscar Trevino said around 60 officers will be posted around the race route and area.
“We do not anticipate any problems, but if any situation arises, we will respond to it in an efficient manner,” Trevino said.
The department doesn’t have a bomb sniffing dog. Trevino said that’s something they’re working to get in the future.
The race attendance has grown over the years. More runners are participating. Reyes said the safety of the people will always come first.
