Drug Smugglers Use Road Spikes to Slow Border Patrol

NEAR RIO GRANDE CITY - U.S. Border Patrol officials said drug smugglers managed to prevent their apprehensions.
The incident happened Friday morning near Rio Grande City.
Agents said they were tracking a vehicle who they previously saw picking up narcotics. When agents tried to stop the vehicle, the smugglers threw out caltrops disabling two of their units.
A caltrop is made of nails or anything metal welded together; specifically designed to blow out tires.
Agents found the vehicle abandoned near the river. Inside, they found more caltrops and bundles of marijuana.
