A student with the Edinburg school district is in custody at the Hidalgo County juvenile detention center after a spokeswoman said he stole a vehicle from the district’s police department.

The juvenile is cooperating with the investigation, and is facing charges of evading arrest, aggravated assault and aggravated assault with motor vehicle, according to Edinburg CISD spokeswoman Lisa Ayala.

The student stole the police car from the district’s alternative education program on Monday, and led police on a chase that ended in the city of Pharr at the Edinburg to Harlingen connector, Ayala said.

The incident began when a scuffle at the alternative school was reported, and the student escaped in the vehicle of one of the officers who responded, Ayala said.

The keys were still in the car, Ayala said, adding that district administration is investigating the officer.

The Edinburg Police Department and school administration is investigating the incident, according to Ayala.
