EDINBURG – Lawmakers are on a tight deadline to avoid a potential government shutdown.

An Edinburg man tells CHANNEL 5 NEWS he fears he will not receive his monthly disability check.

KRGV’s Angelo Vargas spoke with University of Texas Rio Grande Valley Political Science Professor Robert Velez about what could happen during a partial shutdown.

“If we use 2013 as a guide, that one lasted 16 days but Social Security checks still went out, disability checks still went out,” he explains.

He adds there are seven departments that need to be appropriated before the Dec. 7 deadline. However, the main driver of the shutdown is the demand to pay for a $5 million border wall.
