WESLACO – Many people will be celebrating Independence Day by barbecuing, but first responders want people to be mindful of how much time they spend outside.
In many parts of the Rio Grande Valley temperatures reached the triple digits.
First responders said on hot days, like Tuesday, it’s easy to suffer heat-related illnesses, like heat stroke and heat exhaustion.
Weslaco firefighter, Johnny Pena, said staying hydrated is key.
“Dehydration is one of the more common things I’ve seen lately. A simple way to fix that is get out of the sun, drink some water, rehydrate. Sometimes water won’t do it, Gatorade, Powerade, stuff like that would help out with the heat. But stay out of the sun, especially at peak hours,” he said.
Pena said if you have to be out in the sun, he recommends you wear a hat and sunscreen to better protect yourself.
