Bus drivers with the McAllen Independent School District are getting ready to hit the road later this month when the new school year begins.
As part of their preparations, bus drivers will undergo a safety training next week to learn what to do in case of an emergency.
“It’s gonna be all hands on deck,” McAllen ISD transportation Director Edward Barnhart said. "We will have our entire staff training our 60 bus drivers, and all staff will be hands-on in the trainings.”
Barnhart says there is also safety equipment on every bus, such as a fire extinguisher and safety blanket.
As soon as students walk on the bus, they’ll scan a QR code on their tablet that will notify parents of where their children are.
“Our safety techs have been working really hard making sure all of our buses are up-to-date with current safety gear,” Barnhart said.
Safety gear is necessary, but drivers also play a role in keeping students safe at bus stops, Barnhart said
“Please stop whenever you see the stop sign out,” Barnhart said.
It’s a push to keep kids safe by training bus drivers, and reminding others to keep an eye out for kids as the school year starts.
