A new campaign is pushing to save animals in Weslaco, and is hoping to gain the support of the community.
Best Friends Animal Society says the shelter Weslaco Animal Care Services has the highest kill rate in the state and the second highest in the country. They’re hoping the shelter can decrease their euthanasia rate.
The private non-profit hopes to partner with the city of Weslaco.
"There are some pretty quick and feasible things that can be done regarding programming that will make a pretty quick impact on lifesaving,” Laura Donahue — the legislative advocacy director for Best Friends Animal Society —said.
At a Tuesday rally, the organization offered recommendations for the city that they say has worked for other shelters they have partnered with, like Brownsville.
Weslaco city officials said they understand a problem exists and there are many factors that got them to this point.
"The city of Weslaco not only serves Weslaco animals, but we serve 10 other cities in municipalities,” Weslaco spokeswoman Jasmine Rico Joens said. “This is a Rio Grande Valley problem, and the problem is animal over population. It not only affects the Rio Grande Valley, but this is a problem that's happening across the country as well."
Joens said the city is willing to hear proposals from the Best Friends animal society.
