RIO GRANDE CITY – A majority of the Rio Grande City Consolidated Independent School District Board showed up to a meeting Tuesday.

Four out of seven board members made changes and approved restructuring the board.

Two of the three members who were absent lost their titles; however, they remain on the board.

Dr. Daria Babineaux was named secretary and Eleazar Velasquez was approved as the school board president.

There is opposition to Daniel J. Garcia serving on the board.

Garcia is federally indicted for a bribery scheme in Weslaco.

Velasquez says if he loses his seat, there is no plan “B” at the moment.

The board also decided to fire the school district’s attorney Ruben Peña.

Board members said they had trouble reaching him.

Pena spoke to us and said he would make himself available.

He also said the validity of this meeting is something they plan to challenge.

The board must give 72 hours public notice of any meeting according to state law; they believe that rule was violated.
