Zoning Compliance Issues at the Respite Center

MCALLEN – Zoning compliance continues to be a problem for the Catholic Charities Respite Center in McAllen.
The center houses as many as a thousand immigrants at its recent peak.
Zoning rules including risk of fire and controlling the spread of illness apply to all buildings, including respite centers.
The city of McAllen also oversees code compliance at the former nursing home which has become a temporary residence for immigrant families.
City manager Roy Rodriguez says their biggest concern has to do with the number of bathrooms; the city added portable bathrooms as a result.
He also explains there are too many people which could prevent a safe exit in the event of a fire.
