UPDATE (3/24): Edinburg city manager Richard Hinojosa said the city is actively trying to figure out a solution to the parking problem at the H-E-B stadium.

Hinojosa said the city met with the soccer team and representative to find solutions to the issue.

“Whenever you have a major event like that, you’re going to have issues. So, when you do, we address them,” he said. “We’re looking at whether or not we want to setup park and ride, shuttle or bus services to the park.”

The city manager said whatever the solution is decided upon, it will continue to be evaluated after each event.

EDINBURG - An overcrowded park stadium in Edinburg left hundreds of people looking for parking. People living in the surrounding are said they’re concerned.

The streets were filled Wednesday night with cheers as people rushed their way to the unveiling of the H-E-B Park Stadium.

Resident Blanca Padilla said she could hear the excitement from inside her home. The sold-out game resulted in limited parking and attendees were forced to search for parking in her neighborhood.

“There were a lot of vehicles parked in all of the empty lots in my street.  In Ascot Street, there were a lot of cars filling the streets,” she said.

Padilla said she decided to move to the neighborhood because of the peace and quiet. It all changed with the stadium’s opening and a car accident following the game.

“I think as the stadium becomes more popular – because it’s barely starting – the more the events and advertisement given will create a heavier traffic problem,” she said. “I’m having a hard time why vehicles parked here. Was the parking lot not enough to provide parking space? I think there was not enough.”

CHANNNEL 5 NEWS wanted to know how the city of Edinburg plans to deal with the unexpected traffic.

Irma Garza, spokesperson for the city of Edinburg, said city manager Richard Hinojosa met with city law enforcement to discuss the issue.

Hinojosa was unable to meet with us due to a meeting with the team. He said they were having a post-meeting to review the event and to address all parking needs.

“I think this road will get affected. It’s one of the main streets, and Freddy Gonzalez is also important. If both roads get congested, it will cause problems,” Padilla said.

The Edinburg resident she hopes the problem will be addressed before another accident happens.
