MCALLEN – A Rio Grande Valley woman is suspended from her studies Wednesday night.

Police say she made a threat against a student at her college.

The latest threat has some students concerned for their safety.

South Texas College authorities say several people reported hearing the woman threaten to kill another student.

In three weeks, there have been two threats at the STC Pecan Campus in McAllen.

“I think it's pretty shocking. I have never really seen anything like that here," says Student Ronald Soares. 

Tuesday afternoon, on the second floor of Building G, class took a turn after students and teachers called for help.

STC Department of Public Safety Chief Paul Varville explained what happened in a press conference held at the police's department.

“Nine-one-one call center received four calls to our office of threats saying someone saying they would kill someone, and other threats that there would be physical bodily harm,” he stated.

“It's just worrying that something might happen to me or my classmates. I don't want anything to happen," says Scarlett Quintana, an STC freshman.

“We've had two arrests, so far,” said Varville, “based on threats being made at the college, in recent times. We want students to know, in this day and age, any statements about shooting or killing people are not acceptable. They will result in criminal prosecution.”

Despite swift police response, Quintana has this message for the two students who threatened gun violence at her college.

“Why is there a need for you to make these threats? There's counseling here, there's assistance. There's no need to shoot up innocent people for no apparent reason, just because something is going on with yourself,” she says.

Quintana says the scare is forcing her family to consider switching schools.

“My parents are worried about it and are saying if it keeps happening, they will move me out of STC. So, I don't want something to happen,” she tells us. 

No one was injured in either threat incident.

The woman who was taken into custody just after 3:20 p.m. Monday has been suspended from the school while the investigation continues.

Varville says bullying is believed to be what led to the threat.

He says the students' and instructors' 9-1-1 calls helped officers respond in minutes.

As far as school security, the police department patrols the campus regularly by bike and car. STC also has 1,200 surveillance cameras.
