HARLINGEN – A project funded by asset forfeitures is impacting neighborhoods in Harlingen.

The state National Guard rolled in Thursday to take down a home at 1911 Marchita Avenue as part of Operation Crackdown.

“That's one less place that criminals, drug dealers, prostitutes go to conduct their activities," said Major Travis Urbanek, with the Texas Army National Guard.

Harlingen resident Karla Morales looks on as crews clean her neighborhood. She said she noticed suspicious activity there.

"The place will look better, cleaner and more presentable,” she said.

The city of Harlingen said the program puts drug money to good use.

"Everybody kind of teams up for the same goal, which is to get rid of some of those havens for criminal activity,” said Harlingen Planning and Development Director Rodrigo Davila. “Hopefully one day we can replace them with a new home, a park or something else. Removing the bad elements is the main goal."

To see the impact the operation had, CHANNEL 5 NEWS went to C Street where a house was torn down last year. Habitat for Humanity of the Rio Grande Valley built a house there in its place.

Harlingen resident Francisca Monsivis lives steps away from the home flipped last year after an Operation Crackdown demolition.

“It's good they take away all these houses,” said Monsivis. “They are investing the money correctly for people who can't help themselves.”

The demolition of two homes took a few hours.

Officials said Operation Crackdown is credited for the removal of more than 100 abandoned houses from the city’s landscape.

The following list of homes are scheduled to be demolished under the program:
