WESLACO – Weslaco police are working to track down a hit-and-run driver.

The crash happened at the intersection of FM 88 and Sugar Cane Drive Wednesday night.

Investigators told CHANNEL 5 NEWS the driver hit a motorcyclist and fled the scene.

Several witnesses told police they saw the woman texting and driving minutes before the accident.

“She wasn’t paying attention to what she was doing on the road. Her eyes were off the road – distracted driving,” said Weslaco Police Sgt. Bernie Garza. “It’s one of the things we always emphasize don’t do it. Now, it’s a state law against it, but nobody got the license plates.”

Police said the woman is believed to have been driving a 2006 red Ford Focus. The vehicle should have some right front-end damage from hitting the motorcycle.

The motorcyclist underwent surgery for the injuries he sustained.

Anyone with information in the case and who may know the driver can call Weslaco Crime Stoppers at 956-968-8477.
