WESLACO – A dip in the pool sounds refreshing as temperatures continue to rise but could be deadly for children if left unattended.

A new report from Washington, D.C.-based nonprofit organization Safe Kids Worldwide shows drowning is the leading cause of accidental death for children ages one through four.

An investigator with the Hidalgo County Fire Marshal’s Office says parents should be vigilant at all times. He adds even toddlers who know how to handle themselves in the water are still at risk.

KRGV’s Frank McCaffrey found out more about what parents should do to protect their children.
