Hidalgo Co. Resident Speaks Out after Teens Escape Juvenile Center
EDINBURG – A concerned resident is speaking out after two teenagers escaped from a nearby juvenile center in Edinburg.
The teens were placed back in custody and are facing additional charges.
Resident JD Lenderts said he saw law enforcement presence around his neighborhood Sunday night.
He said he later learned two juveniles had escaped from the Evins Regional Juvenile Center.
“Minutes later, a helicopter came and I could see it up high and down low. But I never knew that they had been apprehended until later this morning,” he said.
Lt. Johnny Hernandez with DPS said the agency used a helicopter crew to help find the escapees.
Lenderts said people nearby, including him, started taking their own security precautions after hearing the story.
“We’ll lock our doors better and keep the garage door down and stuff like that. It wakes you up a little bit,” he said.
The Texas Juvenile Justice Department told CHANNEL 5 NEWS the two young people had actually scaled the fence.
TJJD spokesman Jim Hurley said the facility near Lendersts’ place is being secured. He sent the following statement in regards to the matter:
“The campus is currently on restricted movement in order to prevent additional disruptions. Administrative and criminal investigations are underway to determine the causes and remedies for this situation.”
Edinburg police said the teenagers are facing an escape charge, a third-degree felony.
