Hurricane season starts in June, and the Hidalgo County emergency management coordinator says now is the time to start preparing.

“Start now preparing for a hurricane because all it takes is one,” Hidalgo County Emergency Management Coordinator Ricardo Saldaña said. “Don't think it’s not going to happen — it will.”

Saldaña recommends the public start stocking up on food and water, and that it's best to have at least three days’ worth of non-perishable items.

“If your electricity goes out and you need something to cook with, if you are going to use a gas grill, make sure you keep it in an area where you can circulate the fumes from the gas grill so you can cook,” Saldaña said. “If you are going to use a barbecue pit where you use charcoal, make sure it's also in an open area."

Collecting important paperwork and medication should also be on your preparation checklist.
