EDINBURG - Local bus driver says safety is her top priority following the incident involving the 9-year-old girl hit while boarding her school bus.

Yolanda Salinas says bus drivers throughout the state have to go through extensive safety training before hitting the road.

She says she often sees other drivers on the road disobeying traffic laws.

"We put our stop sign, we have our lights, we have our loading lights and unloading lights, and they just pass the stop sign," says Salinas.

KRGV’s Cecilia Gutierrez spoke with Edinburg Consolidated Independent School District’s director of transportation.

Alonso Barbosa says school bus driver training takes months and drivers must attend classes put on by the Department of Transportation.
