LYFORD – A Rio Grande Valley city is without a police department. Not one officer left to patrol the streets of Lyford.

The officers quit, forcing the city to temporarily close the department’s doors.

Residents were not informed about the closure, leaving them wondering – what’s next?

Mayor Pro Tem Rick Salinas says the city’s police department was made up of three officers. In the last 30 days, all of them took jobs elsewhere.

For the meantime, Willacy County Sheriff’s Office will be handling calls.

The city mayor, Jose Solis, told CHANNEL 5 NEWS they have been reviewing six applications for the past two weeks, but some candidates dropped out. He added will take some time to hire new officers.

City officials say one way they can increase officers’ salaries is by increasing property taxes.
