WESLACO – The IRS is asking those who make donations during the holidays to use a new tool to check where their money is going.

The tool allows donors to confirm if an organization is tax exempt and eligible to receive tax deductible charitable contributions.

The president of the Better Business Bureau of South Texas, Dolores Salinas, says fraudulent non-profit organizations are set up to target certain groups.

"Sometimes it is the elderly. Sometimes it is big corporations that are thinking about making a donation at the end of the year for tax purposes. And so, again, it's also important that you do business or you give money to a charity that is reliable and that has provided information,” says Salinas.

With this tool, people can verify charitable organizations online using the IRS website.
