SAN JUAN – A San Juan police officer is behind bars in connection to a drug investigation.

San Juan Police Chief Juan Gonzalez confirmed to CHANNEL 5 NEWS that police officer Salvador Hernandez was arrested.

A federal criminal complaint showed Hernandez is accused of possessing with intent to distribute more than 500 grams of cocaine.

In August of 2016, Hernandez and U.S. Border Patrol agents responded to an accident at Moore and South Stewart roads.

After their arrival, agents and Hernandez found an abandoned Ford Expedition in an orchard. An inspection of the vehicle led to two duffle bags of narcotics.

According to the complaint, Hernandez delivered 37 bundles back to the San Juan Police Department. But DEA agents said they counted 40 taped wrap bundles of cocaine.

The complaint also states authorities have video of Hernandez with possession of the bundles prior to delivering them.

In addition, investigators said Hernandez and another officer discussed what they believed was in the bundles and that the bundles had not been counted by anyone.

Hernandez was suspended without pay pending the outcome of the criminal investigation.
