Suspect in deadly Brownsville shooting pleads guilty to manslaughter
A 36-year-old man arrested after fatally shooting a man in the chest is having a murder charge dismissed in exchange for a guilty plea on a lesser manslaughter charge, Cameron County court records show.
Israel Solis pleaded guilty to the manslaughter charge on Thursday, court records show. His murder trial was set to start on June 1.
Solis was charged in the March 26, 2023, shooting that killed 33-year-old Omar Garcia.
According to previous reports, Solis was driving his vehicle and firing his gun in the air at around 2:30 a.m. near the 6000 block of 5th Avenue when he was confronted by Garcia.
The Brownsville Police Department said Garcia approached Solis to ask him to stop shooting in the area.
“At that point, Mr. Solis got upset, turned the gun on Mr. Garcia and shot him once in the chest,” police said.
Garcia died as a result of the shooting, and Solis then allegedly tried to leave, but was stopped by relatives of Garcia. The relatives forced Solis out of the vehicle and held him until police arrived.
Solis was injured during the incident.
Sentencing for Solis was set for Aug. 3, 2026.
