EDINBURG – The University of Texas at Rio Grande Valley is launching an app to promote student safety.

The Campus Shield App helps students get in contact with police directly.

"It can actually give us specifics like in our buildings that have multiple floors, that is somebody dials our dispatch center here, we can tell what floor they're on,” says UTRGV Chief of Police Raul Munguia.

The GPS feature is geo-fenced to the UTRGV campuses and bus routes, which helps police to find the student’s location even if they don’t speak.

Munguia explains the app is important in case of an active-shooter situation. He says 500 students have registered so far.

KRGV’s Cecilia Gutierrez has more on the story.
