Saturday’s cool front is impacting wildlife in Cameron County by bringing back an annual problem between birds and cars on Highway 48.

Brown pelicans are attempting to fly over the road, but are having a tough time against the rough winds. Many of those birds end up falling into the roadway, where they become vulnerable to traffic.

Three volunteers spent their Saturday picking up the pelicans before they could get hit.

"This is really the first bad event that we're looking at this winter,” Justin Leclaire said. “The last February freeze was really bad, we had about 100 birds go down in one night in that week. Hopefully we're not going to have one of those situations tonight, but we'll see."

The rescue effort is in its fifth year, even after the Texas Department of Transportation redesigned the overpass because of this issue.
