WESLACO – The father of a man killed on Falcon Lake in December said he hopes investigators don’t give up on his son’s case.
No arrests or suspects have been linked to the murder of Oscar Eduardo Garza.
Garza’s father said he believes there will be arrests eventually. He recently visited the Zapata County Sheriff’s Office to talk to investigators about the case.
“All of us, my family, we all are very sad and it has been hard for us,” Garza’s father said. He wanted his identity to be hidden, fearing for his family's safety.
He said he visits his son’s grave at least twice a day.
“For me, losing Oscar, it has been tough. It was a situation not expected. It was a hard loss,” he said.
A night of fishing on Falcon Lake was a common thing for Garza, according to his father, it’s what he enjoyed to do.
Garza was on a boat around 8:45 on a Tuesday night in December with a friend. Investigators said they exchanged words with some other people on another boat and sped off when they saw what appeared to be a weapon.
Shots were fired as they left and Garza was hit.
His father has been keeping in touch with investigators since then.
“From what they told me yesterday, and what I’ve been told before, yes, it looks like the investigation is going well. It’s going to take time. I know it’s going to take time,” he said.
The last deadly shooting on Falcon Lake happened six years ago. David and Tiffany Hartley were attacked while jet skiing.
Tiffany Hartley told police the gunmen shot David in the head as they were trying to get back to shore. She was forced to flee. David’s body was never found.
Garza’s father doesn’t want his son’s case to be left open.
“All I want, and what I always wanted ever since this happened, is for the individuals to get caught. I want them to get caught so that they pay for what they did,” he said.
He added he’ll do what he can to keep his son’s story alive.
CHANNEL 5 NEWS reached out to the Zapata County Sheriff’s Office numerous times since the shooting to get an update on the investigation. We haven’t heard from them since the incident happened.
