Cameron County is chipping in $500,000 to fix a massive sinkhole in the city of Combes.

The sinkhole is located off of Business 77, and city leaders say the hole already broke a water and sewer line.

“We're afraid that we might lose, that the sinkhole will expand to Business 77,” Combes Mayor Silvestre García said.

The city has already spent $500,000 to fix it.

The sinkhole popped up in mid-April as a result of flooding in the area from the March 2025 storms.

The city is reporting all expenses to the Federal Emergency Management Agency.

Funds approved by the county for the sinkhole will be coming from previously allocated pandemic-era funds.

City officials said the sinkhole should be repaired by Sunday, June 1, 2025.
