Increase in Visas to Help Shrimper Shortage
BROWNSVILLE – A change for local shrimpers could mean a full staff next season.
Several shrimpers told CHANNEL 5 NEWS if there aren’t enough shrimpers on a boat, the job is more difficult.
Shrimper Jaquin Macias says the shortage of labor is because there aren’t enough visas for foreign workers.
Last year, Congress only approved an increase of 15,000 visas but this year it is doubled.
"When we're not fully staffed or we don't have enough people on the boat our industries losing about $1 million a day,” explains the executive director of the Texas Shrimp Association, Andrea Hance.
Hance adds the workers are more prone to injury when there’s not enough help.
