HARLINGEN – A man wanted on burglary of habitation and kidnapping charges was apprehended nearly 100 miles away from the Rio Grande Valley.

The Harlingen Police Department says Jose Luis Calles broke into a home late December and assaulted a woman.

According to a press release issued Tuesday, the victim tried calling 911 but Calles prevented her from reaching the emergency line. He then allegedly forced her into her own car and drove away.

The victim escaped in San Benito and was later transported to a hospital for treatment.

A warrant for Calles’ arrest was issued throughout the investigation.

Police say on Monday, they received a call from Kleberg County Sheriff’s Office notifying them that the 26-year-old was in their custody.

Investigators transported Calles back to Harlingen where he was arraigned on outstanding charges.
